Frequently Asked Questions

CGTC Preschool GymHow do I register my child for gymnastics?
Call us at (843) 795.5678 or visit the James Island Recreation Center main front desk to see if there are spots available in your desired class time. There is a $15 registration fee for all new students ($5 for summer only), who must also complete an insurance and liability form before starting classes. You must come in person to complete the registration paperwork and payment information and secure your child's class time.

What should my child wear to gymnastics class?
Please dress your child appropriately for class in clothing that they can move in (no denim, buttons, zippers, belts, etc.). Leotards are preferred for girls, and snug shorts may be worn over the leotard for older girls. T-shirts and shorts are appropriate for boys. Bare feet are preferred, and all jewelry should be removed and hair pulled away from the face for safety and spotting reasons.

When is tuition due each month?
Tuition is due on the 10th of each month and should be paid at the James Island Recreation Center's main front desk (at the front of the facility). Sorry, but we cannot accept cash. Checks should be made payable to "City of Charleston" with "Your Child's Name/Gymnastics" in the subject line.

Does your center host birthday parties?
Yes! Birthday party slots are available on weekends, based on staff and gym availability. Parties include a one hour structured, age-appropriate gymnastics class followed by 30 minutes for cake, presents, etc. in a side area with tables and chairs. Families often choose to bring decorations or activities for the children to enjoy in this area after the class. The cost is $60.00 for the first 10 children and $6.50 per child after that. Please contact Theresa Padron at (843) 795.4207 to check availability for your date.

How can my child join the competitive team?
Gymnasts are recommended for various levels on the competitive team by their Preschool or Recreation instructors based on general strength, flexibility, age, and skill level. If you are interested in having your child evaluated, please speak with your regular class teacher or Kristen Thompson, our Head Team Gymnastics Coach.

How do I schedule a make-up class?
Parents should call in advance to schedule a make-up class, if possible. Please contact our gymnastics desk at 795-4207 and a make-up will be scheduled based on class availability. Make-ups should be made within two weeks of the absence.

Can I stay and watch my child's class?
Yes, parents are welcome to observe their child's recreational or preschool class. Please remain in either the downstairs lobby or the upstairs preschool lobby, and remember that parents and siblings are NOT allowed on to the gymnastics floor or on equipement for safety and insurance reasons.

Is my child allowed to come early or stay later than their scheduled class?
No, since most of our teachers will be working with other groups. If you have an emergency and need to drop off early or pick up late, please give us a call and we will do our best to accomodate you.

If my child decides to drop from class in the middle of the session, and I am on an installment plan, do I still need to pay the remaining installments?
Yes, the entire session tuition is due in full at the time of registration, however, as a courtesy to our families we offer the installment plan as a way of breaking up the payment amount.

If my child is currently registered for the fall session does he/she automatically get registered for the spring and summer sessions?
No, you must register for each session. Registration dates are posted in the gymnastics brochure and classes are filled on a space available basis. You must go to the James Island Recreation Center front desk in person to register for the next upcoming session.
